Hello Everyone Says Hi…..welcome to the DeClunk universe

Hi

Please describe your surroundings so that we can all cosy up.

I am sat in my house, the sun pouring through the windows. I can hear UB40 on the radio from the kitchen and someone is singing along.

Please introduce the band and what each member brings to it.

Ok, its me singing, I used to be the drummer in Kaiser Chiefs but now I play guitar. Ben on piano, he used to be the guitarist in The Dead 60s, he brings a level of expertise. Pete is the bass player, he used to be in The Kooks and he brings some serious big bass vibes. Then Glenn on drums, he is from Howling Bells and he brings a very reliable tempo, much more reliable than my drumming. And finally Tom on guitar, he brings the reckless abandonment.

We know ‘Everyone Says Hi’ as a David Bowie song. Is that where the band name is drawn from and why?  Were there other names in the hat? Please tell us as there may be some folks out there that might make use of your cast offs!

I have a list of band names in my notes which I’ve been collecting for more than 10 years. They’re mostly awful but I had Everyone SAY Hi in there. I went on Spotify to check if the name had been used and the Bowie song came up. I changed it to Everyone SAYS hi in tribute. Cast-offs include Employee Of The Month and Last Man On Earth.

How does the band go about writing a song? Is there one of you that takes the lead on ideas?

Yeh on this album I have taken the lead, then I asked my good friend Justin Parker (Video Games Lana Del Rey co-writer and loads of other amazing songs) to help me finish the lyrics. Then the rest of the band came along and added all the special sauce.

‘Only One’ is the current single, we love it. Is it a love song?

Oh good thanks. Yeh it is a love song. I tend not to write very romantic love songs, I try find a more down to earth angle, so I’m singing ‘I love it when you phone me up in the middle of the night’ because when it’s that special person, you don’t mind stuff like that.

Tell us about the upcoming album. Why is it self-titled? Is there a theme running through it? Please describe the album cover.

That’s 3 questions in one! Ok, it’s very good. It’s self titled because it marks the beginning of a new era. The theme that runs through it is an attempt to create a record that will sit in my record collection. So I can listen to it alongside Neil Young and Tame Impala among others. Throughout I was always thinking, does this feel right? Will this make me feel good when I put it on at half past 10? The cover is by an Argentinian artist I found on instagram called Mariano Peccinetti. I loved his artwork and I asked him to design something based on the songs and he came up with the sleeve.

There is a tour. Does it involve a big bus? What’s on your rider?

Sadly no big bus yet. On the rider is socks and mints.

DeClunk recommends for you the following albums. Tongues by Tanya Tagaq, Braindrops by Tropical Fuck Storm and PF1 by Pill Fangs. Your turn.

The Oracle Sisters – Hydranism

Do any of you have any hidden talents away from music? Maybe one of you is talented at spinning plates or brilliant at making strawberry jam, for example.

Glenn can take an old car apart and put it back together again.

My friend and I go fishing overnight a couple of times a year. It involves copious amounts of beer. A two-man disco breaks out around 11pm. This involves two blokes, in wellies, throwing shapes in the dark. What would be on your playlist for a drunken bankside disco?

Kiss – Rock And Roll All Nite

Weezer – Hash Pipe

Daft Punk – Robot Rock

Thanks for taking the time with DeClunk. We look forward to the album and hope to catch you doing your thing.

Thanks!
