Thursday night at the OFS, Carlisle. The Lovely Eggs are playing the postponed gig from a couple of weeks ago. We turn up a little late and the poet Thick Richard is already doing his thing. It’s fast, witty, cutting and highly amusing. But hang on……where is everybody? There’s only a handful of people doing that weird thing of standing around the edge, not daring to get too close to the stage. There’s nowhere to hide! Thick Richard leaves telling us that we have about 15 minutes to get to the bar before The Lovely Eggs come on. No problem. With this amount of people out the bar was hardly going to be swamped. We stride down to the front, bravely. There is about 25 people in the hall. This could be embarrassing, reminding me of when Mr. Ben and the Bens came to town. A band getting plenty of national radio airtime and exposure and about 20 people turned up. Thankfully a few more punters made their way in as The Lovely Eggs got on stage and launched straight into ‘Long Stem Carnation’. Holly was in fine voice and showed that she likes nothing more than giving her guitar a good punk thrashing. She was also on form putting down a couple of ‘Gig Chatterers’, offering to play quietly so that they could have a good old natter. Amusing but the barbs were not veiled. David was also chatty, did you know that The Lovely Eggs first video was made in Carlisle? See if you can find it. It’s always a great sight watching David all over his drum kit, even more impressive when he’s singing ‘Wiggy’ throughout the whole of ‘Wiggy Giggy’. The Lovely Eggs rocked through crowd favourite ‘Fuck It’, we all sang along whole heartedly! Plenty of tracks from the latest album ‘I Am Moron’ including ‘This Decision’, Insect Repellent and ‘Still Second Rate’. The Lovely Eggs deserve a full OFS. A great night was had by all that turned out.
