Boy Harsher, the Northampton-based duo of vocalist/lyricist Jae Matthews and producer Augustus Muller, have shared a third and final pre-release single from their forthcoming album ‘The Runner (Original Soundtrack)’ out January 21st, 2022 via Nude Club/City Slang.
Following the heavy presence of lead single “Tower” and the flirtatious “Give Me a Reason,” new single “Machina” is a HI-NRG homage performed by Mariana Saldaña of Boan, sung in both Spanish and English. On the surface the song is cheeky and playful, but it truly is an uptempo cautionary tale. In her lyrics, Saldaña describes a cold, sterile entity, the Machine, that is soulless and without a heartbeat. The cryptic message repeats throughout the song – ‘I can’t spend tonight with you, I can’t dance with you, I can’t end my night with you, I can’t feel your heart beat too’. The implication is that contemporary obsession with the “Machina” is a lonely reality. The content is dark and intentionally witty: who are you going to dance with, when the machine is your only companion?
Muller marks his time spent in Mexico City, at the renowned dance club Patrick Miller, as sonic inspiration: “I was reminiscing about Friday nights at Patrick Miller. I was trying to create an artefact from a club in a far off place and an unknown time. Mariana and I were sending each other old freestyle and Hi NRG videos and just having fun.” “Machina” blends the bright cheery palette of HI-NRG and Italo Disco, with Boy Harsher’s shadowy aesthetic merging the best of both worlds.

Boy Harsher’s fifth release is not a traditional album — it’s the musical counterpart to a short film written, produced, and directed by the duo, entitled The Runner, which will be released alongside the album. The Runner is a horror film intercut with a meta-style “documentary” about Boy Harsher’s recording process, featuring break-out performances by musician Kris Esfandiari (King Woman), performance artist Sigrid Lauren (FlucT), and musician Cooper B. Handy (Lucy). Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, is set to stream the film in North America, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand from Sunday, January 16th. Mandolin will host it in the rest of the world. The film will also be screened in select theatres across Europe and North America. The soundtrack balances cinematic instrumentals with pop songs that push the boundaries of Boy Harsher’s sound, and will be released on January 21st via Nude Club/City Slang.
