Deep Tan at Zerox

Ever been to Zerox in Newcastle? Warning….Google maps will send you to some rundown unused place by the station. That’s not it so don’t be fooled. You will find Zerox down by the riverside. DeClunk was there to see Deep Tan. The gig room is upstairs, a small, sweaty, smelly room. Ideal for a couple of hours of jigging about. Before Deep Tan a local electronic duo going by the name of Novyi Lef provided the entertainment. In case you’re wondering from where the name is taken…’s from a 1920’s Soviet arts publication. They also have a synth that kills fascists. I didn’t notice anyone keel over so I guess the gig was a Fascist free zone.

Novyi Lef brought back memories of the 80s as they set into the first number. Probably because I’m old enough to remember the synthesizer sounds really taking off back then. But they are not a retro band. They came on wearing matching red uniforms. Although having different footwear took the edge off the look! Go get some matching boots, gents. This is DeClunk’s first encounter with Novyi Lef and their songs. looking around, everyone was enjoying their songs that seemed to be about buildings and politics. I was too busy having a jig to the beat to concern myself with lyrics. Check them out.

all good bar the footwear!

Deep Tan came on. Kicking off with ‘Constant Inconsistencies’ followed by ‘Deep Fake’. The set was a short but sweet 9 songs. The rhythms are intoxicating, a dark, heady, exotic mix that creeps under the skin. Nobody is standing still and this is one of the few gigs that I have been to in the last few years that wasn’t spoiled by constant audience chattering. Want to know what they played? No worries, nabbed the setlist. Want to know whether they looked cool? No worries, a few pics below. Want to know where you can see Deep Tan? No worries, a few dates left, see below. Go see Deep Tan, DeClunk’s new favourites!
