Constant Follower to play two official showcases at Austin’s SXSW this March and launch their ‘full-album film’ directed and shot by Sean Hall on Scotland’s rugged West Coast where frontman McAll spent so much of his recovery from a violent gang attack.

Constant Follower are set to play two shows at the most revered festival in the world, Austin’s SXSW.

The Scottish quartet released their debut album Neither Is, Nor Ever Was last year to critical acclaim, featuring on 17 ‘Best Albums of 2021’ lists so far, on the legendary Shimmy Disc / Joyful Noise label. Now, the band are preparing to head West for their first US shows.

The journey this far hasn’t been one without its challenges. Growing up in Glasgow, frontman McAll was attacked by a gang on the way home from his girlfriend’s house one evening near his 17th birthday. The catastrophic head injuries left him partially paralysed, unable to write or play guitar, and with all of his childhood memories up until that point gone. He spent the next decade on Scotland’s windswept West Coast, recovering, and gradually re-learning how to play guitar. He began reading the poetry of Norman MacCaig, the only prose he could follow, and eventually the songs that make up his stunning debut began to emerge. The writing on the album breathes the salt spray, and the gentle beauty of the Scottish expanse in an attempt to piece back lost memory and document the hope of a reimagined childhood.

The SXSW Scottish showcase will be hosted by Scotland’s Music Convention Wide Days with support from Creative Scotland, and boasts a line-up spanning a cross-genre spectrum of emerging Scottish talent. On Thursday 17th March from 8pm – 2am, Constant Follower will be playing alongside Georgia Cecile, Hamish Hawk, MEMES, Parliamo and Walt Disco in the inaugural edition of the Scotland at SXSW.

McAll (vocals, acoustic guitar, sampler) will be joined onstage in Austin by Andrew Pankhurst (electric guitar), Annie Booth (backing vocals, synth, piano) and Dave Guild (bass).

Constant Follower have released their ‘full-album’ film by Scottish filmmaker Sean Hall. The film was shot over a period of weeks spent on Scotland’s West coast, featuring many of the places McAll spent time during his recovery. The stunning film is available for public share here:
