Here at Clunk HQ we are very excited to be able to get to know Hann a wee bit. Have a read then have a listen to the fabulously quirky ‘Essential Travel Only’ below. Enjoy!
Hello Hann….welcome to the Clunk universe
Please describe what surrounds you right now so we can get a picture in our mind’s eye.
I’m surrounded by too many coffee tables and arts supplies and dog toys and books. My cat-sized dog is sleeping on the window ledge and I’m still lazing around and drinking my second cup of tea as I’m not a morning person.
HANN is a band and HANN is Hannah. Is HANN the band just Hannah?
Hannah is the singer and the face of a project that has been ongoing for over a decade. We’ve had other names in the past, but have now ended up using half of my name for the band name! The two other core members are Neil and Ed. We all lived in Manchester but now we’re in Berlin, Todmorden and Southport respectively, but continue working together, recording and songwriting and producing remotely…it seems to work quite well!
What music did you grow up listening to? What was your first live music experience?
I grew up listening to roots reggae, heavy metal, rock n roll, classical music. A huge, disorganised pile of CDs…none of which I had bought myself, provided me with a solid groundwork growing up. The first gig I bought my own ticket for was System of a Down.
What do you like to listen to? Do you like physical copies or are you strictly a downloader? What was the last album that you purchased?
I like listening to anything that makes me feel something or makes me want to dance. At the moment I can’t stop listening to Polo & Pan, a french electronic music duo. They’re great to roller skate and dance to. As far as bands go – I’ve really been into a German Indie pop band called ‘Von Wegen Lisbeth’ recently. I am, I’m afraid, strictly a downloader…but if I like a street artist or a live band that are selling CDs I’ll usually buy one – even though I don’t have any way of listening to it!
We are really enjoying ‘Daddy’s Drugs’ and ‘Essential Travel Only’ at Clunk HQ. Can you remember the first song that you wrote and what it was about?
I’m really glad you’re enjoying them! These songs were cowritten as part of the ‘Hann’ project and are entirely fantastical and not in anyway anecdotal. The first song I wrote was called ‘Stupidly Ridiculous’. I was 17 and must have been having boy troubles, but the song still holds up. There’s even a whistling solo.
We are hoping for an album and a tour from HANN. Any plans in the pipeline?
I think there will probably be an album before a tour. The pandemic on the one hand destroyed our dreams of touring and gigging last year and this year…but on the other hand has given us a lot of time to write lots of new tunes. It’s swings and roundabouts!
If we were to come to your neck of the woods for a weekend where would you take us? You are the Entertainments Committee!
Well, I live in Berlin and there’s a lot to do. On Friday night we’d go to a club – there’s a lot of techno clubs here that have gardens…and a lot of times there will be live music in those gardens! On Saturday we’d go to a lake -Strandbad Plötzensee – it’s a beach that is run by the owners of another club here. On Sunday we would go to
Mauerpark – there’s a flea market, but it’s also like a musical Disney land – lots of street musicians and performers come and put on great shows.
Any bands/artists that you recommend we check out?
I was going to say the Lovely Eggs but I saw you’ve already interviewed them! Check out Robin and the Goblins, Milly Blue, Olivia Void, Vincent Long and the Convincers, Rachel Glassberg.
Thanks for taking the time for Clunk. Don’t forget to come and perform in Carlisle, dinner at Clunk HQ!
