A DeClunk Q & A with Tan Cologne

Please introduce Tan Cologne and give us a description of your surroundings so we can get all cosy for the DeClunk Q & A.

We’re a duo residing in Northern New Mexico, but currently on a train from Ostuni, Italy to Rome. We’re mid-way in the mountains, the sun is shining and the plant life is luscious.

The Declunk army of researchers reckon that you folks are from New Mexico. Is that true (they can’t be trusted) and does the location reflect in your songwriting?

Yes, it’s true. We are based in Northern New Mexico. It is our home and creative landscape.

Tan Cologne is an interesting name. How did it come about and were there other names in the hat?

Tan Cologne the name came from cross connections of a few sensorial encapsulations of words. We like that tan itself can be several experiences, and cologne makes you think of a cologne (or scent). This was sort of important because as a entity we are audible but inclusive of all the senses.

We rather enjoyed your latest single ‘Space In The Palms’. The track is taken from the upcoming album ‘Earth Visions of Water Spaces’. Can you tell us about the album? Is there a theme running through it? Do you have a favourite song on it?

Thank you! The entire album is about water and water particular to Earth. It’s sort of our visitation to different experiences and bodies of water, droplets of water, atmospheric exchanges of water, and the transformation of Earth by and through water. It is inspired by what may become and what has existed before our timeline. We were drawn to focus on water through finding shells within the desert landscape around us. We tried to pick a favorite, but it feels as they all go together.

Are you going on the road with it? Any chance of heading over to the UK?

Yes! We are currently en route to Stockholm, Sweden and recently played our first show of our Euro tour in Italy at an art space called Pescetrullo for Terra Terra. We will be playing a few shows in Sweden and then heading to the UK to play with our buds and recent collaborators, Sunstack Jones, then on to Sheffield for a show with Bobby Lee and then London with Joe Harvey-Whyte. Our last stop will be Paris and then back to the states for a show in San Francisco at the end of October.

If we were to visit you for the weekend where would you take us? You are the Entertainments Committee.

Secret places we cannot mention.

Any bands/artists that you recommend we give a listen to?

Daniel Lanois, Natural Information Society, Bobby Lee, Nailah Hunter

Many thanks for taking the time with DeClunk. We look forward to hearing the new album.

Thanks for having us!
