It’s been a long time coming! Today is the day for the release of ‘Spotlight City’ on CastleFace Records. To celebrate this glorious day here is a Q & A with Dan.
Hi Dan…….. welcome to the DeClunk universe.
Please give us a description of your surroundings so that we can all cosy in.
Im just at my computer desk at my little home studio, taking a break from working on some music.
When did you take up drumming? Did you have some kit in the house when you were younger? Were you told to ‘stop that bloody racket!’?
I started drumming around 15, my dad is a musician and got me a drumset when I started expressing interest in playing music. No “stop that racket” from him, he’s on the level.O Sees seem to make records on a regular basis. Is that why a solo album has been a while to get round to?
OSEES are pretty busy but this solo record took a while to get around to because I had no idea how to record myself and took the time to figure it out, at least well enough to release.
Cessna was the first track to be released. Is the album full of electronic elements? Please describe the music we can expect to hear.
The album is 100% an electronic record, yes. It’s very sleepy.
The album is called Spotlight City. Why did you choose this and were there any other album titles in the hat that were discarded?
I like to think of some of these tracks as scenes from a movie that doesnt exist, kind of “sountrack-y”. In the beginning of recording, to avoid aimlessly floundering, I started envisioning scenes from a movie and what I would like to hear playing in the background and Spotlight City just became the tentpole for writing.
What about the artwork for the album cover, who designed it and why?
Its a painting from Donnie O’Donnell, I was a fan of his and I thought his work would look great on an album cover so I contacted him and here we are. Its a portrait of my parents late dog, Ozzie (RIP)
Is there to be a tour? If so, are you coming to the UK?
I dont want to say no but its not something ive thought about much. Some of the gear I use is not made for traveling, if I could condense my setup then maybe!
Any bands/artists that you suggest we have a listen to?
If you like Spotlight City than I suggest Roedelius, Harold Budd, Steve Reich, Jon Hassell, Conrad Schnitzler
If we were to come to your neck of the woods for a weekend where would you takes us? You are the entertainments committee!
Zebulon on a weekday
Thanks, Dan, for taking the time with DeClunk. We look forward to the album and seeing you do your thing some time soon.
