Here’s a quirky, cool little number that we rather like. It’s by Jack Barksdale and it’s called ‘Freak Show’. Here’s what Jack has to say.
“I co-wrote ‘Freak Show’ with Alabama singer-songwriter Matt Prater,” he says. “We have a mutual friend and fellow songwriter, Abe Partridge, who uses chaos and dissonance as scene-setting and storytelling tools to take the audience to a new realm with him. Matt and I both picked up on the power of this technique and wanted to try it out. That was where we started.”
A twist on the idea of spectator and spectacle, the song turns the sideshow idea on its head. Barksdale explains, “We ended up making it about this guy who goes to the circus to make fun of the ‘freaks,’ but he’s the one everyone is pointing and laughing at — which I thought was a pretty good message!” The spooky, slightly off-kilter vibe of the track and lyrics complements the rest of the EP, perfectly capturing the sound Barksdale sought when he decided to work again with producer Mark Edgar Stuart.
‘Freak Show’ is taken from the forthcoming EP titled Out Of Order, due out on September the 13th. Another track was released before ‘Freak Show’. That one’s called ‘Law and Order’. Give that a listen too.
There’s a few live dates if you’re across the pond.
