Here it is then. The second album from Kate Clover,I know it’s cool to use the word sophomore in music press but we know big words without shoving ’em down your throat. Back to the album, it’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Kate struts all over the grooves and punchy guitars. The title track and opener ‘The Apocalypse Dream‘ drives straight into a jump around affair and sets one up for the rest. ‘Like A Domino and No More Romance will keep you bouncing enough to be into a workout. The album keeps rolling, it nods to the past yet still sounds like a record that one should know today. We are to busy pogoing to give you insights into the songs. Fuck it, you listen to it! A fun workout without watching a video of that Joe bloke doing his reverse lunges. It’s going to be an ace night out to see Kate do it. Check the tour dates below the’ little ole get to know ya Q & A’ especially for the release and for you.
Hi Kate…. Welcome to the DeClunk universe.
Please describe your surroundings so we can all cosy in.
I’m currently sitting in the lobby of our hotel drinking coffee. Somewhere in Arizona.
At what age did you realise that you wanted a career in music?
I never internet fed to pursue a career. Things snowballed and momentum took me. Since a very young age I wanted to be in stage playing guitar. It was so abstract to me but I knew that was my calling.
How do you go about writing? Is it a music idea first then words, the other way round or a mixture?
Music first, melody then lyrics. Sometimes it all happens in one go but that can be rare. I’m always chasing those moments.
The new album, ‘The Apocalypse Dream’ is out soon. Please tell us about the songs that feature, what inspires your songwriting and do you have a favourite on the album?
Inspiration can come from anything. There’s not a singular source for me. It’s whatever strikes in the moment and can be completed. I’ve found living a full life is a good source of inspiration. Being part of the world. I don’t have a favorite song on the album because they all represent different moments for me.
Please tell us the last book that you read, the last music that you listened to and the last film that you watched. Were they good?
I’ve been rereading some classics recently I finished For Whom the Bell Tolls. Last film, I’m not too sure. I have a really short attention span these days and barely watch anything at the moment. Not in a pretentious way just can’t seem to do it.
If we were to come to your neck of the woods for a weekend where would you take us? You are the entertainments committee!
Record safari in Atwater village and good taco place. That’s pretty much every weekend with my husband.
A couple of times in a summer my friend and I go fishing. It also involves staying out for a night and plenty of beer. A bankside disco tends to break out around 11pm. What would your playlist be for a drunken late night bankside disco?
That sounds really fun! I’d DJ some soul. That always sets the right mood.
Have you any bands/ artists that you recommend we give a listen to?
There are so many great new bands and I urge everyone to check out. I’m always pushing new bands into people.
Ingrates, Tenement Rats, Billy Tibbils, Uni Boys, Les Lullies, Loosey, Sick Thoughts, Baby Shakes.
To name a few.
Thanks, Kate, for taking the time with DeClunk. We look forward to the album and hope to catch you performing in the UK later in the year.
The Apocalypse Dream is Clover’s sophomore (!) record due out April 5th, 2024. Produced by Jonah Falco (Fucked Up, Chubby and the Gang, The Chisel) and mixed by Grammy award winning producer Carlos De La Garza (The Linda Lindas, Paramore). Sonically inspired by 70s punk, power pop and a bit of The Kinks. Lyrically inspired by Beat poet Charles Plymell. Reflecting on topics such as self-destruction, politics, love and the desire to find oneself in a world gone mad.
