The Intrepid DeClunk Jude heads to Glasgow for Ezra Furman

EZRA FURMAN _ THE ART SCHOOL _ GLASGOW

Car troubles and an all round fairly crap day led to questions about whether it would be worth driving all the way to Glasgow and back on a Sunday night (no return trains I’m afraid) but luckily common sense prevailed and we found ourselves hitting the motorway.

Ezra Furman is an artist I have talked about on these De-Clunk pages in the past. Since first hearings on Marc Riley’s 6 music shows, to purchasing the supreme ‘Transangelic Exodus’ album that had just been released, to delving into the back catalogue and subsequent releases Furman has been able to captivate me whether screaming punk (12 Nudes), singing pure pop (Sex Education), garage rock (with the Harpoons), or experimental journeys into sounds (other releases).

I’d never seen Furman play live before and I am very happy to have done so now. An hour and a half of pure joy, stood on the stickiest floor known to man. I was thinking to myself that all the reviews that I’ve posted to these De-Clunk pages have been positive, but on reflection why would I be spending my hard-earned on going to see a band I didn’t like? It’s another five star this time around!

The line-up of Furman on vocals and sometimes guitar alongside another guitar, bass, drums, and guitar/keys were able to recreate the large production on some more stadium sized riffs (the Springsteen influenced Forever in Sunset) but there were also intimate moments when the rest of the band left Furman alone on acoustic guitar.

It was joyous. There was plenty of singing along (Love You So Bad, Suck the Blood From My Wounds) and fun to be had, and I would urge you to have a listen and buy yourself a ticket!
