Fancy a couple of minutes kicking back and allowing the music to flow through you? Here is just the thing, “Colaïdo” from Caspar Claus. It’s rather gorgeous.
His upcoming album ‘Cells‘ is out on Sept 25th via InFiné. Built entirely from the sounds of his cello, transformed and reimagined until the boundaries between acoustic and electronic dissolve. the album also features collaborations with Matt Elliott (The Third Eye Foundations) and producer Basile3.
The track takes its name from the boat owned by his father, Pedro Soler, inviting us to picture it gently moored in the harbour of Banyuls-sur-Mer, a Mediterranean town in the south of France just a few kilometres from the Spanish border. Nearby lie La Barlande – the family home that gave its name to the first father-and-son album released on InFiné – and the cover of Tancade, which inspired the title of Gaspar’s first solo album. Together, these places form an intimate landscape where family memories, Mediterranean scenery and the artist’s musical roots converge.
With “Colaïdo“, Gaspar invites listeners to drift across overlapping waves of cello, whose slow movements evoke the gentle swell of the sea in a journey that is at once soothing, contemplative and quietly melancholic.
The release of “Colaïdo” also echoes the artistic bond between Gaspar Claus and his father, Pedro Soler, who passed away in August 2024. Together, they released two landmark albums on InFiné, forging a unique dialogue between cello and flamenco guitar. Their musical connection lives on through a number of now-iconic performances, including sessions for NPR Tiny Desk and La Blogothèque, capturing a rare sense of artistic communion and transmission.
On the track, Gaspar said “Colaïdo is the name of a small sailboat my father bought on a whim one day, back when my sister and I were teenagers. It was on that boat that I learned to sail. The piece is infused with this memory – inevitably tinged with nostalgia.”
