With new album ‘Cells‘ out this week, Friday Sept 25th, via InFiné, today Paris-based cellist, composer, and producer Gaspar Claus is sharing his new single “Ecstasy“. The album’s most obvious point of departure into electronic territory, “Ecstasy” is nevertheless composed entirely from his cello.
“These sounds were transformed, put through machines, digitized, stretched, sometimes metamorphosed into synthetic textures or even percussion. So it’s not a meeting between cello and electronics, but rather a story of transformation,” explains Gaspar Claus, who highlights the particular involvement of producer Basile3 on the track.
The music of Cells and Mathilde Cartoux, whom Gaspar Claus entrusted with directing the video, share a certain approach to “organic” matter, whether musical or visual.
Filmed between Paulilles and Banyuls, her images extend the physical and sensory contours of the track, staying close to bodies and gestures, to the shifting light between sun and moon, across a landscape of stone and Mediterranean sea.
The film follows a progression from the intimate to the collective, from stillness to movement, from warmth to coolness, before returning to calm. Opening and closing with Gaspar Claus, it traces a loop in which the cello becomes the thread running through a feeling of almost mystical rapture, of sensory abandon… of ecstasy.
